Acne can be very frustration and cause self confidence issues in many people. On top of dealing with acne, many of these same people end up with acne scars, which are sometimes very severe. There are a number of procedures now available that are effective in not only reducing breakouts but also reducing the appearance of those acne scars. There are five common types of acne scars: ice pick acne scars, boxcar acne scars, rolling acne scars, hypertonic acne scars, and keloid acne scars. The best treatment for your acne scars will vary based on the type of scarring you have as well as your skin type.

Microneedling – There are several different forms of microneedling involving different equipment, but the overall concept is to make micro injuries into the skin’s surface, which induces collagen production. This helps to plump fine lines and wrinkles as well as the indentations from acne scars. The microneedling procedure can also help to reduce pore size and help reduce future breakouts. Microneedling is a fairly quick procedure with little to no downtime.

IPL Photofacial – IPL Photofacials or intense pulsed light treatments are ideal for people with blotchy, sun-damaged, or discolored skin, or whose skin is affected by large pores, freckles, or wrinkles. An IPL will treat dark spots caused by acne and sun damage, as well as redness on the skin’s surface from Rosacea and broken capillaries. On the right skin type, it effectively improves skin texture, eliminating discolorations, reducing pore size, and minimizing wrinkles and fine lines. This procedure involves only minimal discomfort, while redness and swelling sometimes occur after treatment but disappear shortly.

Ablative Fractional Lasers – The Palomar ICON Laser is the most advanced cosmetic laser available and is FDA approved to treat unwanted lines on your face. The ablative fractional laser not only improves lines and wrinkles but also improves skin tone and texture and can be very effective in treating severe acne scars. This procedure can effectively treat photodamage, atrophic acne scars, hypopigmented scars, and dyspigmentation. These lasers have incredible resurfacing power but do require a little more downtime than some of the other treatment options.

Non Ablative Fractional Lasers – This fractional laser is the most advanced technology for skin rejuvenation. These lasers aim toward improving texture, mild to moderate wrinkles, acne scarring and hyperpigmentation due to sun damage and aging. This laser is a good option for those with mild to moderate acne scarring that cannot deal with the healing time needed for an ablative fractional laser. The fractionated treatment targets both the dermis and epidermis, providing significant skin resurfacing capabilities of an ablative laser while retaining the downtime of a non ablative laser.

Fillers – Dermal fillers are an effective and immediate treatment for acne scars. The filler used and dose required for acne scar filling varies and is dependent on the patient’s facial anatomy and the type of scarring. Although dermal fillers are not permanent, you will see improvement that occurs as a result of the technique of the injection. As the filler is injected, it will break up some scarred down bands and because the product and technique stimulate collagen production, it will produce some long term improvement. Most fillers have no downtime and are great when used in conjunction with other acne scar treatments.
