One of the first things people notice about another person’s face is the nose. It is one of the most significant facial features. The nose plays a critical role in the appearance and symmetry of the face.

Unfortunately, some people have a nose that detracts from the appearance of their face. Sometimes the nose is excessively large or wide, and may be out of balance with the rest of the face. The bridge of the nose may have a “hump”. The tip of nose may be large, hooked or droopy. For patients these or other issues, a cosmetic rhinoplasty (or nose job) may be the answer. Here are a few of the most frequently asked questions we get about rhinoplasties:

Where are the Incisions Placed?
The only visible incision is placed in the columella, the narrow strip of skin between the two nostrils. This incision is tiny, any not noticeable unless a patient is looking closely for it. The rest of the incisions are made inside the nose and not visible at all.

How Long Does a Rhinoplasty Procedure Take?
Depending on the extent of the issues that needs to be addressed and the type of rhinoplasty performed, the procedure usually takes about two to three hours to complete.

What to Expect the Day of Surgery?
Rhinoplasty is an out-patient surgery and does not require an overnight stay in the hospital. On the day of surgery, patients should wear comfortable clothing that buttons or zips up the front so that nothing needs to be pulled over the head. You will be given general anesthesia, as well as a sedative to ensure comfort during the procedure. You will need someone to drive you home following the surgery. Afterwards, the doctor will pack and splint your nose to help keep it supported during the healing process. You will receive detailed aftercare instructions to follow during the recovery period.

How Long Is the Recovery Period?
After a nose job you can expect some bruising, swelling and puffiness around the nose and eyes. During the recovery, it’s important to take your medication and use icepacks to keep the swelling down and to minimize the discomfort. Most patients can return to work within two weeks after surgery. Your nose will look better immediately after the procedure, and the results will continue to improve over the upcoming year.

If the appearance of your nose doesn’t suit your face, schedule a consultation with Dr. Peter Butler, one of the award-winning plastic surgeons at Gulf Coast Plastic Surgery.
