Male and female pattern baldness is genetic. However, if you are experiencing mild to moderate hair loss, there are options to help re-grow your hair. Platelet Rich Plasma Hair Restoration at The Skin Care Center at Gulf Coast Plastic Surgery is a safe, all-natural, non-surgical treatment for thicker, fuller hair and renewed hair growth.
Platelet Rich Plasma, for PRP, is a serum that is made from your own blood cells. It contains an abundance of growth factors, which are essential to growing and maintaining a healthy head of hair.
Prior to your procedure, about 30-60 CC’s of your blood will be drawn. At the Skin Care Center, the blood is placed into a special type of centrifuge called Harvest ® Platelet Concentrate System, which isolates the PRP. Topical anesthetic is applied to the scalp. A portion of the PRP is then injected into the scalp, just under the surface of the skin. The remaining PRP is applied to the scalp and then microneedling is used to help the PRP penetrate into the skin. Microneedling uses small needles to create tiny “micro injuries” in the surface of the skin. This process jump starts the skin’s natural healing ability and stimulates the hair follicles.
Following the procedure patients may experience some pinpoint bleeding or redness. Most patients tolerate the small amount of redness well enough to go about their daily activities immediately after treatment.
While individual results can vary (and cannot be guaranteed), most patients notice less hair loss four to 18 weeks after treatment. At the 18 to 26-week mark, patients will notice thicker, fuller hair. New hair growth becomes apparent in 26 to 52 weeks. For the best results, a total of four PRP treatments are recommended, between four and six weeks apart.
