Breast Augmentation is the most common cosmetic surgery performed in the United States and around the world. At Gulf Coast Plastic Surgery, we see hundreds of patients each and every year looking to improve the appearance of their breasts. Many people come in with similar questions. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about breast implants and breast augmentations:

Should I wait until after I have children to have a breast augmentation?
It’s actually not necessary to wait until after having children to get breast implants. Over half of the patients that get a breast augmentation have not had children. Most women have no problems breastfeeding after an augmentation. However, after pregnancy and breastfeeding, some patients may need a breast lift or revision surgery to improve the appearance of the breasts.

How do I know what size is best?
The “correct” size of breast implants is very personal preference. The decision as to the size of implants should always be made by the patient. A skilled plastic surgeon can take measurements, listen to your goals and suggest a range of implant sizes that will help you achieve the look you want but SHOULD NOT choose the size for you. At Gulf Coast Plastic Surgery, we offer Vectra 3D Imaging that allows you to “try on” different sizes of implants and see how they will look on your body. Vectra 3D Imaging is the most accurate predictor of breast size after augmentation available.

Do breast implants affect the results of a mammogram?
Yes, regardless of whether your implants are above or below the muscle, they can interfere with a mammogram. However, mammography centers are accustomed to dealing with patients with implants and use additional views during the mammogram to complete the procedure effectively. It is important that you let your mammography center know you have implants when you schedule your appointment for a mammogram.

Do I need a breast lift?
During your consultation, your plastic surgeon will take measurements that can determine whether or not a lift is necessary. While an implant provides a small amount of lift, it cannot correct a sagging breast.

What’s the difference in moderate profile implants and high-profile implants?
High profile implants project further out from the chest but have a small circumference of the base of the implant. Moderate profile implants have a base that is larger around but they don’t project as far from the chest. Your plastic surgeon will explain benefits of all styles of implants and recommend the ones that will work best for you.

How long is the recovery after a breast augmentation?
Following a breast augmentation, a patient will be sore and tender for the first few days. These symptoms are well managed with pain medication. After about a week, patients can return to work and non-strenuous activities. It is usually safe to start working out about four-to-six weeks after surgery. However, every patient is different and your surgeon will let you know when it’s safe for you to resume a normal workout routine.

If you’re interested in having a breast augmentation, or have more questions, schedule a consultation with one of our award-winning, board-certified plastic surgeons Dr. Jocelyn Leveque or Dr. Peter Butler.
