Many people experience acne and think it’s one of the most irritating dermatological conditions they’ll go through. Then they get their acne under control and are left with acne scars, which are not as easy to treat as the acne itself. There are different types of acne scars, like dark spots or red marks that go away with time, exfoliation, or topical scar-fading treatments. However, there are more severe acne scars known as atrophic scarring. These are the indented scars that form below the upper layer of skin as a result of severe acne. This happens when the damage caused by the acne prevents the skin from being able to regenerate tissue correctly, leaving behind indentions in the skin, sometimes known as ice pick, rolling, or boxcar scars.

A procedure known as microneedling has proven to be very effective on atrophic acne scars. Most patient see a noticeable improvement in the appearance of the scars after just a few microneedling treatments. Microneedling uses tiny needles, moving over the skin to break down scar tissue in the skin, which is responsible for those uneven scars. It also stimulates the healing process by inducing new collagen production, which over time fills in the scarred areas.

This non-surgical treatment uses your body’s own collagen production to increase the scar healing process. With a few months of microneedling, patients can see a reduction in acne scarring, fine lines, hyperpigmentation and overall smoother healthier looking skin. Our Rejuvapen microneedling device allows us to specifically target problem areas, using fine-tip needles to gently puncture the skin, creating the micro injuries. After the microneedling process these tiny punctures triggers the body’s healing reaction, which creates the boost in collagen production.

Most patients say the procedure doesn’t hurt, but in some cases, people worried about discomfort can request a topical numbing cream. In the hours following the procedure, the treated area my feel sensitive and appear pink to slightly red, similar to a sunburn. Over the next few weeks, you will start seeing results from your treatment. For treating acne scars, more than one treatment may be recommended in order to see the best results. The results can continue to improve over the next 6 months to a year, at which time you can see the optimal outcome of your microneedling treatments.
