Everyone wants perfectly pouty and kissable lips. Unfortunately aging decreases the amount of hyaluronic acid in lips which means a loss in volume and elasticity. Some people are born with thin lips and want to increase the fullness of their lips. Today’s dermal fillers, use hyaluronic acid to increase the volume and improve the shape of the lips, making it possible for everyone to have soft, pillowy lips.

There are many dermal fillers on the market. Some of the best known are Juvederm, Vobella and Restylane. These products all share a powerful main component: hyaluronic acid (HA) gels. The injection takes only a few minutes and the results are instant. Whether a patient wants a subtle, very natural result or a more dramatic look, there is a lip filler that can do it. The lip fillers used today cause less bruising, allergic reactions, and swelling as compared to those used just a few years ago. Here are answers to a few of the commonly asked questions we get from our patients.

Is there anything I should do to prepare for my appointment?
Yes, it’s a good idea to avoid blood-thinning medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen for a week prior to getting your filler. These products can increase the risks of bruising at the injection sites.

How long is the average lip filler appointment?
An appointment that just includes lip fillers typically last around 30 minutes or less, occasionally it can take longer depending on the amount of “work” being done.

What should I expect immediately after my appointment?
Immediately after getting lip injections, patients may experience some swelling of their lips. This is usually very subtle and will subside within a couple of days. You will likely feel a little numb from the dermal filler itself, or from any topical numbing agent that is used, for about an hour after treatment. Many dermal fillers contain lidocaine, mixed in with the hyaluronic acid to help make the injections more comfortable for patients.

Is there anything I should avoid after my lip enhancement treatment?
Yes, you should avoid massaging the injected area. We place the dermal filler in very precise locations in order to boost and shape the lips. If you feel or see any imperfections in the lips, let us know before you leave or call us if you notice something when you get home. If a touch is needed, we will perform it at no charge.

How long will my lip filler last?
Depending on the dermal filler used, you can expect you results to last anywhere from 6 to 18 months.
