The neck is a very important part of the appearance of your face, but it is often over looked. With age, the skin below the chin can begin to sag or experience fat accumulation under the jawline, more commonly known as a double chin. Fat gain in this area can make the face look puffy and cause definition loss in the jawline. Changes like this can be the result of normal aging, weight fluctuations, or genetics. Even patients that maintain a healthy weight can often see a fat accumulation under the chin. The difficult part about fat in this area is that it is stubborn and almost impossible to get rid of on your own through diet and exercise.
Neck liposuction is the fastest and best way to get rid of unwanted fat in the neck area. It is a semi-invasive procedure used to contour the jawline, creating a more defined neck and chin. The procedure can have a dramatic effect on a patient’s overall look and take years off their appearance. The result from this procedure are very natural looking and best suited for anyone from their 20’s to their 50’s. It is important that the skin still has a healthy elasticity, or the remaining tissue may become deflated and sag. In older patients there may be some sagging skin or skin laxity that would require a face and/or neck lift or other procedures in combination with the neck lipo for the optimal result.
Neck liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure, requiring little downtime. Very small circular incisions are made in the treatment area and then the unwanted fatty tissue is gently suctioning away, sculpting your neckline in just one treatment. Liposuction to the neck will smooth the neckline and contour the chin for aesthetically pleasing results. The technique is customized to each individual patient. The ideal candidate for neck liposuction should be in overall good health and understand the neck liposuction procedure and recovery. Neck liposuction is performed in the office under local anesthesia and typically takes less than an hour. After our plastic surgeons create 1-2mm incisions along the chin, a thin cannula, or hollow cylinder style tube, is inserted to suction away the excess fatty pockets.
Patients usually experience a one- to-two day recovery period. After the treatment, pain is minimal, and any discomfort treated with prescription medications or over the counter pain relievers. Patients will need to wear a compression garment for several days following a neck liposuction procedure, which ensures proper healing and keeps swelling and bruising to a minimum. Most patients are able to return to work in two to three days.
