A well-defined jawline is often looked at as the basis of the facial structure. For both men and women, a good jawline makes for a more appealing profile and more youthful appearance. The Skin Care Center at Gulf Coast Plastic Surgery offers non-surgical jawline enhancement treatment using injectable dermal fillers and Botox. While the results aren’t as dramatic or long-lasting, non-surgical jawline enhancement can improve facial definition, contour an unbalanced jawline and reducing the appearance of sagging jowls with no down time.

Medically speaking an appealing female face looks like an inverted triangle, so the top of the face gradually tapers into a thinner chin. In men, a square jawline and more “boxed” shape to the face is desired. There are several dermal fillers that are used for non-surgical jawline contouring. Dermal fillers can help boost areas where there has been a loss of collagen, resulting in a more defined jawline. Fillers are also used to “tighten up” parts of the face that are drooping. Botox can also be used to subtly modify the shape of your jawline, particular for women.

Sometimes, the jaw is too pronounced. If this is the case, Botox is used to shrink overdeveloped masseter muscles. This is the muscle that moves the jaw when chewing food or clenching the teeth. As people age, these muscles tend to get larger. As this muscle gets larger, it creates a square looking jawline. Nonsurgical jawline contouring using Botox helps to relax these jaw muscles, which in turn helps them to reduce in size. Relaxing these muscles, balances the face and softens the appearance with a slimmer jawline. It won’t affect a patient’s ability to chew or move their jaw.

As we age, fat can accumulate in the lower portion of the neck and face. Commonly referred to as jowls and a double-chin, these conditions can be improved using an injectable called Kybella. Kybella dissolves fat in the areas in which it is injected. It is an ideal treatment to use along the jawline where fat deposits are hiding the bone structure.

Jawline contouring procedures using dermal fillers, Kybella or Botox require little to no downtime and patients can usually resume their regular activities immediately following the treatment. Patients could experience some mild swelling and tenderness at the site of the injection but this typically resolves within a few days. Results from dermal fillers will be visible immediately and will improve as the swelling decreases. Depending on the dermal filler used, the results can last up to 24 months. When using Botox for jawline enhancements, the results will be visible within 2 weeks of the treatment and typically last 4-5 months. Kybella can require more than one treatment. The full effect of Kybella is usually visible about 4-6 weeks after treatment. The results are permanent, meaning the dissolved fat won’t regenerate. However, the remaining fat cells will increase in size if the patient gains weight.
