The eyes are the area of the face that often shows the first signs of aging. This can be due to a variety of factors, including heredity, environment, and age. Both the upper and lower eyelids are prone to developing crepey skin, discoloration, and puffiness. Over the years, the treatment for tired-looking eyes has gone through many evolutionary changes. There are now many surgical and non-surgical methods to rejuvenate the eye area.

An eyelid lift is cosmetic plastic surgery to the eyelids that can help improve the signs of aging and the tired look that frequently develops around the eyes. A traditional eyelid lift or blepharoplasty could include:

  • Removing excess upper eyelid skin.
  • Removing excess eyelid fat.
  • Removing excess lower eyelid skin.

These are the most common starting points for a blepharoplasty. A skilled plastic surgeon would make recommendations and customized the surgical plan based on a patientā€™s needs.

As we age, the face tends to lose volume. This can result in a gaunt, hollowed-looking eye area or skeletonized-looking face. Fat transfer or fat grafting to the face and eye area can restore a more youthful appearance. Fat is harvested from the patientā€™s own body, treated, and then injected. Once it establishes a blood supply, the fat is permanently in place.

For those patients looking for a non-surgical approach to eye-area eyelid rejuvenation, fillers are a game-changer. Using a special cannula, a skilled practitioner can safely inject filler to restore volume to the tear trough or junction between the eyelid and cheek, which softens it and makes dark circles less prominent. Treatments such as Intense Pulsed Light and Fractional Laser resurfacing improve color, texture, and tone around the eye area.

If you look in the mirror and feel like your eyes are aging, schedule a personal consultation with one of our award-winning, board-certified plastic surgeons at Gulf Coast Plastic Surgery. Drs. Peter Butler, Jocelyn Leveque, and Nathan Patterson.
