All moms are aware of the changes your body goes through during pregnancy. Fluctuations in hormones, weight, skin tone and texture, stretch marks, loose skin, and much more affect the body. Unfortunately, most moms put the needs of their families first and often put themselves at the bottom of the list. While this is understandable, it is vital to take care of yourself. Moms need to make themselves a priority and focus on physically feeling good. When you take care of yourself, you’re happier and healthier, positively impacting the entire family.

One of the most common requests plastic surgeons receive from patients who are mothers is for a “mommy makeover.” A mommy makeover usually consists of two or more surgeries performed at the same time. The primary two surgeries involved are a tummy tuck and breast surgery

Common breast surgeries include breast augmentation, a breast lift, breast augmentation with a lift, or a breast reduction.

Liposuction is another common cosmetic procedure done as part of a mommy makeover.  For example, liposuction of the waist/hips can enhance the results of a tummy tuck.

Below are details about the different procedures performed during a mommy makeover.

Full Tummy Tuck

The full tummy tuck, also known as a traditional tummy tuck, is performed in a hospital outpatient surgery center under general anesthesia. First, an incision is made on the lower abdomen from hip to hip. The incision is kept below the bikini line, enabling patients to hide the incision and the resulting scar under swimsuits. Next, the abdominal muscles are repaired, and the belly button is moved to its new location on the patient’s flat tummy.

Mini Tummy Tuck

The mini tummy tuck targets the lower abdomen below the belly button. The mini tummy tuck incision is made on the lower abdomen, and excess skin and fat are removed. The incision for this procedure is shorter than the incision used in a full tummy tuck.  A mini tummy tuck does not include the surgical repairs and tightening of stomach muscles, and the belly button is not repositioned.

Liposuction

Liposuction may be used as an alternative to a tummy tuck for those patients with only localized fat pockets around the abdomen. However, liposuction does not remove excess skin and is not an option for patients with significant skin laxity. Liposuction also will not repair separated abdominal muscles. During the liposuction procedure, small incisions are made in the treatment area, and a cannula (a hollow tube) is used to suction out the fat cells. Patients who have excess fat and loose skin may benefit from a tummy tuck with liposuction added.

Breast Augmentation

Standard breast augmentation is performed using a silicone or saline-filled implant.  The implant is inserted into the breast pocket through a small incision usually placed under the breast.

Breast Lift

Some women only need a breast lift to restore an attractive contour. Breasts naturally may become saggy, flat, or stretched with age, childbirth, and breastfeeding. Fortunately, a breast lift, also known as mastopexy, can create a beautiful, pleasing shape.  Your surgeon may recommend a combination of breast lift and breast augmentation to give you a look you want.

Breast Reduction

Motherhood can leave some women with too large, heavy breasts.  A breast reduction removes excess breast tissues and lifts the breast into the proper position.

No matter what type of “mommy makeover” you want, it is recommended that you have finished having children before undergoing this surgery.  It is also essential to keep in mind that this is major surgery. You will need help caring for small children and with household chores for several weeks after your surgery.
