For patients that suffer from acne, it can be very frustrating and very damaging to a person’s self esteem. However, there are always new studies, products, and technologies to help treat acne, as well as the scars that can be left behind. At the Skin Care Center at Gulf Coast Plastic Surgery, we have an amazing team of skin care experts that care about our patients and work diligently with them to help them love their skin and feel the best about themselves.
A daily skin care regimen is very important to treating acne, but everyone’s skin is different so what works for someone else, may not work for you. The first step is to meet with one of our skin care experts so we can examine your skin, determine what kind of acne you have, pinpoint the possible causes of your acne and develop a treatment plan for you. Here are a few of the best new treatments that can help improve acne and the skin damage caused by acne:
Hydrafacial – A hydrafacial is an amazing way to keep your skin clean and glowing. Having a regular facial keeps the dead skin cells off your face, which helps reduce acne. Acne is often caused by oils and dead skin that clog the pores, so having a hydrafacial monthly keeps your skin looking fresh and youthful. The hydrafacial hydrates the skin, while using an abrasive tool to scrub away dead skin cell revealing the new, fresh skin underneath.
Microneedling – Microneedling is a great option to not only improve acne, but also to treat acne scars and large pores. Microneedling creates micro injuries in the skin using tiny needles. Then the body’s immune response kicks in to heal these micro-injuries. This healing process can improve acnes scars and dark spots on the skin, as well as induce collagen production, leaving the skin looking voluminous and healthy. The day of the microneedling treatment, patients skin may be red, similar to a sunburn, but that subsides within 1 to 2 days.
Chemical Peels – Chemical peels, similar to other acne treatments, also remove the dead skin from the surface of the face. However a chemical peel can penetrate deeper into the layers of the skin. Following a chemical peel most patients will go through several “peeling sessions”. Within a few days of the peel, the top layers of skin will tighten, dry up and begin to flake off. After this initial peel, there may be another more intense peeling session, where a thicker layer of skin will dry and peel off. Depending on the peel and the patient, this process can last one to two weeks from the time of the initial peel until all of the dry skin has been removed from the face. Afterward, the skin is left looking renewed and feeling softer than ever before. Keep in mind a chemical peel is not for everyone. People with certain skin types can experience skin damage from the peel, this is why it is very important to speak with an experienced skin care expert before having a chemical peel.
Dermaplaning – Dermaplaning is another great treatment to remove the dead skin cells from your face. Often dermaplaning is combined with facials or other treatments as an added benefit for the skin. Dermaplaning is the process of using a very sharp blade and carefully moving it across the surface of the skin removing fine hair as well as dead skin cells.
