Liposuction has become one of the most popular cosmetic procedures performed in the United States because it is so versatile. Liposuction is also incredibly safe. This quick procedure can remove stubborn fat from almost any area of the body to create a beautifully contoured shape. In many cases, it can be performed in the office under local and/or oral anesthesia. Among the most common areas treated with liposuction are the arms, back, abdomen, thighs, and hips.

When considering liposuction, it is important to ask the right questions. At Gulf Coast Plastic Surgery, liposuction is a highly sought-after procedure. During your consultation, board-certified plastic surgeons Dr. Peter Butler and Dr. Jocelyn Leveque will encourage you to ask anything you may want to know about the ins and outs of liposuction. Our doctors will spend ample time with you addressing your concerns and will make sure all of your questions are answered. However, we have compiled a list of the most commonly asked questions to help you get started on your list:

When Will I See My Liposuction Results?
The length of time it will take to see your final liposuction results depends on the treated area. A person who has liposuction of their neck will see their final results sooner than someone who had fat removed from their lower abdomen or thighs. However, no matter the location treated, you should notice an improvement right away. Results will continue to get better and better as the swelling and bruising subside.

Will Liposuction Cause Loose Skin?
After your liposuction procedure, our doctors will give you post-op instructions and a garment designed for the area treated so that the skin tightens around the new, slimmer, body part. It is extremely important to wear the compression garment as recommended in order to see a great result.

Are Liposuction Results Permanent?
The fat cells that are removed during liposuction are gone permanently. However, if you gain weight, the remaining fat cells in your body will increase in size. Maintaining a healthy weight is key to maintaining the results of your liposuction.

How much fat may be removed in one liposuction procedure?
There is no magic number when it comes to the “right” amount of fat to remove during liposuction. The amount of fat removed depends on each patient. For example, the removal of 5 pounds of fat would make a tremendous difference for a patient weighing 130 pounds, where as a patient weighing 230 would need more fat removed to achieve the desired shape and contour. For patients needing a large amount of fat removed, the plastic surgeon might recommend scheduling liposuction treatments in stages. Liposuction IS NOT a weight loss treatment. If necessary, our surgeons may suggest weight loss options before going forward with liposuction.

How long is the recovery for liposuction?
The recovery from liposuction is fairly quick. Most patients find they can return to work a day or two after the procedure. There will be some bruising and swelling, which will subside within one-to-two weeks. Patients usually wear a compression garment for 4-6 weeks after surgery, which can be worn under clothing.

If you have been considering liposuction, schedule a consultation with one of our award-winning, board-certified plastic surgeons, Dr. Jocelyn Leveque or Dr. Peter Butler.
