There are certain areas of the body that many people experience frustration over, when trying to lose weight. These areas are the ones that have fat deposits and they can be difficult to target through diet and exercise to get rid of that unwanted fat. Many people turn to treatments or surgery to address the issues they are dealing with. It’s important to know which treatments are best and what kind of results you can expect. Two of the more well known procedures available are liposuction and coolsculpting.
Liposuction, also called lipo, is a cosmetic procedure to suction the fat from the desired areas. Your doctor or plastic surgeon can perform this procedure on your hips, belly, thighs, buttocks, back, arms, or face to reduce the fat in those areas. Lipo is performed on patients that would like to reduce a moderate amount of fat in these areas. For patients that have larger weight loss goals, your plastic surgeon may recommend are target weight before performing a procedure like this. Depending on the treatment area, this procedure may be done under local anesthesia, so you are numb but you are awake for the procedure. After liposuction, there is some tenderness and bruising, which subsides in 1 to 2 weeks. This is a highly effective treatment for fat reduction and is one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed in the U.S. today.
Coolsculpting is a non-invasive procedure that uses a cooling technology to freeze fat cells, damaging them, killing the cell. It is FDA approved for the abdomen, love handles, thighs, upper arms, bra fat, back fat, and double chin. Coolsculpting is done using a device that suctions the treatment area in to be cooled, so if you do not have enough fat in an area, this would not be an option. The results of coolsculpting are not immediate and can take a few weeks to see and it can require several treatments, that can be costly, to get the results you desire. In addition to the costs, Coolsculpting only freezes away a small percentage of the fat cells in the treatment area, which is why multiple treatments are recommended.
When comparing these two treatment options, the costs after all of the treatment sessions have been complete is relatively similar. However the results of lipo are immediate and your plastic surgeon will be able to give you the results you desire. These are two very different treatment options, with liposuction being the more absolute procedure to ensure you will achieve the look you want.
